Winter Miller
Playwright and Author
Going from NBC Page to Fox News to Playwright and Author
Season 1 Episode 3
Have you ever wondered what life is like as an NBC Page? Or what it was like to work at Fox News in the early days?
Well listen up because Winter Miller is going to spill her stories about moving through the ranks of entertainment and media starting in the low ranks of NBC Page-dom.
In this episode, Winter discusses what it was like to work at Fox News, despite personal disagreement with the organization, and using it to move ahead in her career. After Fox, Winter moved over to working at the New York Times, working with “the smartest people she’d ever met.” And in typical New York Fashion, Winter pursued acting while waiting tables for a while. During that time Winter learned that if she wanted to get cast, she would have to write the parts for herself.
Winter attended Columbia for an MFA in playwriting and during that time she worked at the New York Times and met Nicolas Kristof who she worked with for the following few years. While there, she traveled to Chad with Kristof to do research for her award winning play,
In Darfur.
Winter also discusses being mentored by Gloria Steinem, writing the play “When Monica Met Hillary,” and authoring a children’s book about her cat Gato,
Not a Cat.
This episode is important for those looking to pursue creative work. It's critical to know the value of flexibility and learning throughout your career. As well as to know the value of mentorship throughout the years.
